The actual cost of that reception to the Public funds did not amount to $8,500. The principal expense was defrayed from private sources and amounted probably to a large total.
The excellent order maintained by the Police and the general decorous behaviour of the Native Community during a period, when the City was thronged by some 30,000 additional visitors, was the subject of general remarks; and I may add that during the whole period of the Chinese visit the daily average of Crime of every ...
